new issues for information mediation

Abstract

In this article, we seek to analyze the concept of information integrity in light of the perspective of information mediation. The concept of information integrity has been used by the G20 Digital Economy Working Group, the forum that brings together countries that represent the largest economies in the world. This concept is present in several official documents produced by study groups linked to the United Nations. Three documents were selected for analysis: “Protecting Information Integrity: National and International Policy Options”, from 2018; “Information Integrity: Forging a Pathway to Truth, Resilience and Trust”, from 2022; and “Information Integrity on Digital Platforms”, from 2023. Some elements were identified that represent a new problem for the mediation of information, such as: the focus on flow, on what happens during the circulation of information; the insertion of informational questions into a more complex contextual framework, with different dimensions; the association of disinformation with other phenomena, such as hate speech, the attention economy and the big tech business model. It is concluded that the perspective of information integrity does not locate discussions only within the scope of a functional problem, but considers the other dimensions present in studies on the phenomena of disinformation.
