Digital Preservation Policy
At Informatio, we are committed to the digital preservation of our publications, ensuring that academic content remains available for future generations. To achieve this goal, we implement LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) technology, developed by Stanford University, which allows us to preserve our articles securely and redundantly.
What is the Digital Preservation Policy?
Informatio's digital preservation policy sets out the guidelines and procedures to ensure the longevity and continuous accessibility of our electronic publications. This policy includes creating redundant copies of content, periodically validating its integrity, and implementing security measures to protect access and data authenticity. Our goal is to mitigate risks associated with technological obsolescence, system failures, and natural disasters, ensuring that academic knowledge remains accessible and unaltered over time.
How the LOCKSS System Works
-
Redundancy of Copies: each article published in Informatio is stored in multiple locations. These locations include libraries and other academic institutions participating in the LOCKSS network. Redundancy ensures that even if some copies are compromised, others will be available to restore the content.
-
Continuous Validation: LOCKSS uses a continuous validation process to verify the integrity of stored copies. Network nodes communicate regularly to compare their copies of the content. If any discrepancies are detected, incorrect copies are replaced with correct versions from other nodes.
-
Autonomy and Decentralization: each institution participating in the LOCKSS network manages its own node. This not only distributes the storage and maintenance load but also reduces the risk of catastrophic content loss, as it does not depend on a single point of failure.
-
Secure and Controlled Access: access to preserved copies is strictly controlled. Only authorized institutions can access and restore the content. This ensures that preserved copies are not altered or accessed by unauthorized entities.
Benefits of Using LOCKSS in Informatio
-
Long-term Preservation: redundancy and continuous validation ensure that the journal's content remains available and unaltered over time.
-
Protection Against Technical Failures and Disasters: by storing copies in multiple locations, LOCKSS protects against local technical failures and natural disasters that could affect data storage.
-
Resilience and Recovery: if a copy is corrupted or lost, the system can automatically recover content from other copies in the network, minimizing the possibility of permanent loss.
Local Backup and Security Copies
In addition to the LOCKSS system, Informatio implements additional local measures to ensure digital preservation. These include:
-
Periodic Backups: we perform periodic backups of the system, ensuring that data and configurations are protected against technical failures and can be quickly restored if needed.
-
Content Backup Copies: we maintain backup copies of all published articles, ensuring that each piece of content is duplicated and protected against potential loss.
-
Metadata Preservation: metadata associated with articles, including crucial information for identifying and retrieving content, is also adequately backed up and protected.
In conclusion, implementing the LOCKSS system in Informatio, complemented by local backups and security copies, represents our commitment to digital preservation and the long-term accessibility of academic knowledge. Through these technologies and practices, we ensure that our articles remain a reliable and available source of information for researchers, students, and professionals worldwide.
