Analysis of covid-19 terminology published in scientific and vulgarization literature

Keywords: CORONAVIRUS, TERMINOLOGY, COVID-19-TERMINOLOGY SHEET

Abstract

The end of 2019 surprised us with the resurgence and spread of SARS-CoV-2, the cause of covid-19, which caused changes of all kinds, even giving rise to new terms or its redefinition, as a pandemic. Given this, we carried out an investigation whose objective is: to analyze the terminology around covid-19, in scientific and popularization literature, published between March 2020 and February 2021, aiming at the construction of a terminology sheet. Methodology: bibliographic research in MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, LISTA and Oxford Journals. Search strategy: «covid» and «covid-19», «coronavirus-2019», «sars-cov-2» or «SARS-CoV-2», in the title and full text. Results: 72,589 documents, after the filter there were 281 left in the areas: Psychology (60), Medicine (60), Information Sciences (45), Bioinformatics (10), Sociology (46) and Biology (60). The terminology sheet: Term, Classification, Synonymous Terms (other names), Definition, Context, Associated terms and notes. Conclusion: the terminology of covid-19 is broad and the contents of these documents are interdisciplinary, even with the human sciences, including evidence of disinformation and Fake News. As attributes: covid-19 is a pandemic virus, with high transmissibility, mutations, variants and strain. The properties: semantic ambiguity between disease and virus, including neologisms: Covidento, Covidar and Covidioso (in Portuguese).
